VoIP monitoring and alerting

Good VoIP monitoring combines synthetic tests, signalling outcomes, media quality, infrastructure health, and user reports. No single metric proves that people can place and hear calls.

Useful signals

Signal What it reveals
Registration count Endpoint reachability and authentication health
Answer-seizure ratio Calls answered compared with attempts
SIP failure classes Routing, policy, capacity, or authentication problems
RTP loss and jitter Media-path quality
MOS or estimated quality User-experience trend, with measurement caveats
Concurrent sessions Capacity and saturation risk
DNS/TLS health Service discovery and trust failures

Alert on sustained deviation and user impact, not one isolated bad packet. Keep a short baseline for business hours, weekends, and known maintenance windows.
