VoIP monitoring and alerting
Good VoIP monitoring combines synthetic tests, signalling outcomes, media quality, infrastructure health, and user reports. No single metric proves that people can place and hear calls.
Useful signals
| Signal | What it reveals |
|---|---|
| Registration count | Endpoint reachability and authentication health |
| Answer-seizure ratio | Calls answered compared with attempts |
| SIP failure classes | Routing, policy, capacity, or authentication problems |
| RTP loss and jitter | Media-path quality |
| MOS or estimated quality | User-experience trend, with measurement caveats |
| Concurrent sessions | Capacity and saturation risk |
| DNS/TLS health | Service discovery and trust failures |
Alert on sustained deviation and user impact, not one isolated bad packet. Keep a short baseline for business hours, weekends, and known maintenance windows.
