VoIP deployment readiness checklist
A VoIP rollout is ready when the team can make, receive, transfer, recover and support calls under realistic conditions—not when a single test phone registers. This checklist separates the decisions that must be made before a pilot from the evidence needed before production cutover.
Before the pilot

Test the calls people actually make
Test at least one example of every call class, in both directions where applicable:
- internal extension-to-extension calls;
- inbound calls to main, direct and queue numbers;
- outbound local, national, international and restricted destinations;
- transfer, hold, conference, voicemail and caller-ID behaviour;
- emergency calling according to local policy and carrier procedure;
- calls from each site, network type and remote-work arrangement;
- degraded conditions such as a busy link, failed WAN path or unavailable carrier route.
Record the expected result before testing. A pass should be specific: destination, displayed caller identity, audio both ways, feature behaviour, duration and any associated record or alert.
Production cutover decision
Use a short go/no-go review with named owners. The purpose is to surface a missing dependency while there is still time to defer safely.

First-week operational checks
After cutover, review more than incident tickets. Compare successful-call volume, failed-call reasons, registration failures, quality metrics, queue performance and unusual destination patterns against the baseline. Sample calls from each site and device type. Capture small configuration changes in the operating record rather than letting the production build drift from the approved design.
Keep the checklist evergreen
Re-run the relevant sections when adding a site, changing a carrier, replacing a firewall, introducing a new phone model or altering identity systems. The details will change; the questions remain useful because they test ownership, evidence and recovery rather than a particular vendor interface.
