VoIP migration planning: a staged cutover guide
A VoIP migration changes phones, numbers, routing, network behaviour, user workflows, and support processes. The safest projects make dependencies visible before moving production traffic.
Suggested stages
- Inventory numbers, devices, features, carriers, locations, and integrations.
- Map emergency, fax, alarm, lift, door, and analogue dependencies.
- Validate network, DNS, QoS, identity, and security prerequisites.
- Pilot with representative users and difficult call paths.
- Cut over in small groups with rollback and support coverage.
- Verify inbound, outbound, transfers, queues, voicemail, recording, DTMF, and emergency workflows.
- Retire legacy services only after the agreed observation period.
