VoIP migration planning: a staged cutover guide

A VoIP migration changes phones, numbers, routing, network behaviour, user workflows, and support processes. The safest projects make dependencies visible before moving production traffic.

Suggested stages

  1. Inventory numbers, devices, features, carriers, locations, and integrations.
  2. Map emergency, fax, alarm, lift, door, and analogue dependencies.
  3. Validate network, DNS, QoS, identity, and security prerequisites.
  4. Pilot with representative users and difficult call paths.
  5. Cut over in small groups with rollback and support coverage.
  6. Verify inbound, outbound, transfers, queues, voicemail, recording, DTMF, and emergency workflows.
  7. Retire legacy services only after the agreed observation period.
