Map the voice call path before changing a network layer

A call crosses more than one diagnostic layer. Before replacing a router rule or changing a PBX setting, map where the failing path actually travels.

The voice call path before changing a network layer

  1. Trace a sample phone from switch port and VLAN to gateway, DNS, call server and carrier edge. Record which devices can be observed at each handoff.
  2. Save the current addressing, route and firewall rules. Agree on one registration and one two-way call test, with a rollback owner.

A successful ping checks reachability only. It does not prove that SIP setup or RTP media follows the intended path.

Check the wider path

Include the path in both directions. A phone may reach the PBX through one route while return media takes another, so the pilot must cover incoming and outgoing audio as well as registration. Record which handoff the change owner can actually reverse.

Use the Networking layers for voice troubleshooting to confirm terms and settings before the change.
