Check a VoIP protocol change before rollout
A protocol setting can affect call setup while leaving audio untouched, or change media security while registration still looks healthy. Record the exact path you intend to change before touching a production service.
Map the affected exchange
Write down the caller, called party, phone or softphone, PBX, session border controller and carrier involved. Mark where SIP signalling travels and where RTP or SRTP media travels. Include transport, port and encryption settings only where you have confirmed them from the active configuration.
Agree on a test and rollback
- Save the current configuration and record the firmware or software version at each changing endpoint.
- Choose an inbound and an outbound call through the affected path. Check setup, two-way audio, hold and transfer where those features matter.
- Set a change window and name the person who can restore the saved settings if calls fail.
A successful registration proves neither call completion nor media flow. Compare the result with the intended path before expanding the change.
