Use network layers to narrow a VoIP fault

Start at the first point where the affected call differs from a working one. Link status, IP configuration, DNS answers, SIP messages and RTP flow answer separate questions.

Network layers to narrow a VoIP fault

  1. Record the failing endpoint, time and switch port. Compare its VLAN, address, gateway and DNS result with a working endpoint on the same service.
  2. If registration succeeds but audio fails, inspect the negotiated media addresses and packet flow instead of reopening the entire network plan.

Keep original captures and configuration versions. A fault seen at one layer may have been caused earlier in the path, so note the observation point.

Keep the comparison precise

Keep tests at the same boundary when comparing two calls. If the failing device sits on another VLAN or uses a different resolver, that difference is a lead, not proof that the application server caused the fault. Work outward from the first verified mismatch.

Use the Networking layers for voice troubleshooting to interpret the recorded messages and settings.
